I Installed the Wrong App: Wireless Printer Enrollment

I call this the most exciting episode of Season 1 because we finally remove the computer from the enrollment handoff.

That can make a real difference when printers are spread across stores, clinics, or warehouses. "Bring every printer to this laptop" is not much of a rollout plan.

Wireless does need an asterisk. It describes how the provisioning file reaches the printer. It does not mean every printer is battery-powered, has Wi-Fi, or needs no cables at all.

The Zebra ZD411 in this demo still needs power. It also needs a network path before enrollment can finish, through Ethernet or configured Wi-Fi depending on the hardware. What disappears is the USB connection to a Windows computer and the desktop setup utility for the final handoff.

Reuse the Workspace ONE file

The wired enrollment walkthrough created a staging record and downloaded its provisioning file. Wireless enrollment can reuse that file when it still contains the right user, device naming, Organization Group, tags, and other staging choices for these printers.

If the criteria changed, make a new record. Finding an old text file is not the same as finding the right text file.

For the workflow shown, I need the correct provisioning file, a powered printer with a supported network path, and a nearby mobile device that can run Zebra's setup app.

A Samsung phone worked in my recording. That is a demo result, not me declaring every Android phone supported. Check the current app, operating system, phone, and printer requirements before rollout.

The phone's job ends after the handoff. Once the printer has the file and a network path, the phone can go back to being a phone. The ongoing conversation is between the printer and Workspace ONE UEM.

Yes, I installed the wrong app

Zebra Print and Zebra's printer setup app are different applications. I know this because I installed the wrong one first, which is an excellent way to add a troubleshooting step to your own demo.

The recording calls the correct app Zebra Printer Setup Utility. Zebra has since renamed it Zebra Nucleus Connector, so the store listing may not match the video.

Open the setup app, choose printer discovery, and refresh the nearby-device list. The app looks for printers over Bluetooth.

Discovery took longer than I expected, which is always excellent timing when a camera is running. Pressing the Feed button helped this printer appear. That is what happened in my demo, not a universal fix for every model. If discovery fails, use Zebra's current instructions for the exact printer and app version.

Send it

Once the app finds the printer, select it and open Available Files. The provisioning file must already be available on the phone. The video does not show how I transferred it there.

Select the file and choose Send to Printer. You can see the printer report that it is receiving data. It then needs the network connection so it can continue toward Workspace ONE UEM.

The video does not show the printer appear in the console. That is the expected next result, but confirm the complete path in a supported environment before using this as deployment documentation.

The provisioning information did not become clever. We simply moved the last local step onto a device an administrator can carry to the printer. Fewer cables, less equipment to drag around, and one wrong app for me to install before you have to.
